PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Morrison & Co has undertaken a few significant project management and operational management projects which included:

Southern Hydro, Victoria - Management and Operation of Companies

Derby Hydro Power, Western Australia - Management and Operation of Companies

Various Directorships

Southern Hydro, Victoria

Morrison & Co executives have been seconded to Southern Hydro to facilitate change at senior management level. Morrison & Co has also undertaken a number of projects:

  • Trading Policy and Organisational Restructuring - Morrison & Co developed and implemented an electricity trading policy and appropriate organisational structure, including -

    • Assessing company structure and location of functions and resources;
    • Developing an electricity trading strategy; and
    • Establishing an electricity trading policy including segregation of duties, trading limits (including value at risk and volumetric limits), reporting structures (including “Mark to Market” reporting), and trading control procedures.

  • Negotiation and Execution of a Long Term O&M Contract - Morrison & Co assisted Southern Hydro with the negotiation and conclusion of a long term O&M agreement. Under the O&M agreement, a third party undertook all of Southern Hydro’s asset maintenance. Plant availability and performance are pivotal to maximise Southern Hydro’s revenue potential. It was therefore crucial to include suitable incentive mechanism in the agreement.

  • Hydro Reservoir Management - Morrison & Co developed an electricity contract and pool price forecasting suite of analytical tools using the Morrison & Co Electricity Market Model (EMM) as the core product. These tools explicitly model Southern Hydro’s specific storage reservoirs and scheduling constraints and provide for -

    • Calibration of the pool price model with current forward prices;
    • Analysis of bidding strategies; and
    • Optimisation of hydro reservoir management and plant scheduling.

  • Developing and Tendering Cap Contracts - During development of the business plan for the successful acquisition of Southern Hydro, Morrison & Co had identified VoLL insurance contracts as a potential new revenue source as well as a revenue smoothing mechanism for Southern Hydro. On acquisition, Morrison & Co set up a tender process for selling VoLL insurance contracts that are designed to provide protection against periods of extreme high electricity prices.

Derby Hydro Power, Western Australia

Morrison & Co has provided advice on the commercial and financial aspects of the proposed tidal power project in the West Kimberleys including:

  • Modelling the complete tidal power system incorporating -

    • a detailed hydrological model of the tidal power plant;
    • provided engineering advice on gate flow equations;
    • re-optimisation of gate sizes and the scheduling rules; and
    • the dispatch process whereby the tidal and supplementary diesel plants are scheduled to meet the overall demand at four different geographical locations via a new transmission grid.

  • Financial modelling to assess financial viability of the proposed scheme;
  • Liaison with government agencies; and
  • Discussion with potential debt and equity providers.
