Community Involvement

Morrison & Co invests in assets that are important to local communities - airports, energy, public transport and social infrastructure. We believe that these investments perform best when the communities in which they operate are flourishing.

Morrison & Co and our affiliated businesses are active contributors to initiatives that support the social, cultural, sporting and economic success of local communities.

We are also passionate New Zealanders. Over the years we've involved ourselves in a number of initiatives to support New Zealand's unique national culture and encourage national debate. These cover a broad range - from sponsorship of music and the arts through to a campaign to let New Zealanders choose a new flag. These projects share a common theme - fostering a proud and independent New Zealand national identity and encouraging New Zealanders to understand and believe their future is based on being internationally competitive in all they do.

INFRATIL-WAITAKERE COMMUNITY AWARDS

The Infratil-Waitakere City Community Awards have been set up to recognise and celebrate the achievements or work by voluntary groups and organisations in the community. These awards are open to all voluntary and not-for-profit organisations – they are about celebrating and acknowledging volunteers and the generous amount of work they do in our community.Through the Infratil-Waitakere City Community Awards, volunteers are given the recognition they really deserve! The winner in 2009 was the United North Piha Lifeguard Service.

WELLINGTON AIRPORT REGIONAL COMMUNITY AWARDS

Wellington Airport joins forces with Wellington Community Trust each year to recognise the voluntary organisations that do so much to make our community a better place. The Awards provide a way for the community to say thank you. Community Awards are first held in the five council regions Kapiti, Porirua, Hutt City, Upper Hutt and Wellington City, then winners from these regions attend the regional awards ceremony at Wellington Airport.

TRUSTPOWER COMMUNITY AWARDS

Over the last fifteen years the TrustPower Community Awards have grown into the country's largest volunteer-based Awards programme. The Awards were initially set up with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council in 1994. Since then, TrustPower has established Community Awards in cities and districts throughout the country. The TrustPower Community Awards are run in 24 districts in conjunction with local district or city councils.

WELLINGTON HIGH PERFORMANCE AQUATICS (WHPA)

Modelled on the Australian Institute of Sport, WHPA aims to support athletes to enable them to excel at an elite level in aquatic sports. Wellington Airport and Infratil are the foundation funders of WHPA.

WHPA’s initial sport is diving, with other aquatic disciplines to follow as the centre proves itself and grows. The organisation is unashamedly focussed on elite performance, believing that success will inspire greater participation and performance by a wider following of athletes.

We recognise the need to keep high performers in New Zealand and have committed to support the establishment and development of WHPA. Check out the website or visit on facebook.

A MEASURABLE GOAL FOR NEW ZEALAND

Prior to the last election, Morrison & Co launched the ‘Measurable Goal for New Zealand’ initiative. This was motivated by our concern that New Zealand’s gradual decline in relative wealth is resulting in a relative decline in our living standards. We believe New Zealanders need a collective focus on a long term, measurable goal in terms of New Zealand's performance against that of other nations. We believe it’s important for the nation to recognise that the lifestyle and social services we value are dependent on economic success. We also believe that a focus on setting targets and measuring achievement will ensure that we get the best possible results in areas such as health and education.

Morrison & Co aims to contribute to and foster a national debate on New Zealand’s long term goals, progress and performance.

You can keep abreast of developments on the Measurable Goal for New Zealand on Facebook.

NEW ZEALAND FLAG

In 2004, Morrison & Co helped launched a campaign to change New Zealand's flag. Five years later we believe that the underlying issues have not changed. Many New Zealanders are still not emotionally connected to their flag and are still dissatisfied with its design and with what it represents. The fact remains that our current flag is a colonial emblem which does not well represent the way we feel about this country, its history or its future. It does not reflect the way we see ourselves nor the way we want others to view us. Yes, it's a huge task to get New Zealand's flag changed but we are committed to giving Kiwis a choice.
